Pumpkin spice latte? Check. Sweater weather? Hopefully.
Fall in the Chicago suburbs is one of my favorite times of year, especially here in Lake and McHenry Counties. Between pumpkin patches, apple orchards, local festivals, and colorful trees, there are so many reasons to get outside and enjoy the season.
Of course, “sweater weather” comes with a little uncertainty. Halloween might feel like summer—or your kids might need snow boots with their costumes. That’s part of living here!
Whether you’re considering moving to the Chicago suburbs or looking for something new to do close to home, here are five reasons fall deserves a spot at the top of your list.
1. Pumpkin Patches and Corn Mazes Become Family Traditions
Around here, visiting a pumpkin patch isn’t just about picking out a pumpkin. It can turn into an entire Saturday.
Hayrides, corn mazes, fall treats, and pumpkins give everyone a reason to put down their phones and spend some time together.
Richardson Adventure Farm in Spring Grove is one of our area’s best-known fall destinations. Its enormous corn maze is the kind of outing that becomes an annual tradition—and gives your family plenty of opportunities to debate which way to turn.
But I also love introducing people to smaller local spots, including Tobie Family Farm in Grayslake.
The Hering Homes Team hosts a client event there, making it especially meaningful to us. It’s one of those local gems that you might discover through a neighbor or friend, then add to your own fall traditions.
That’s something I love about living in Lake and McHenry Counties: the big attractions are fun, but the smaller places often become your favorites.
2. Apple Picking—and Yes, the Cider Donuts
Apple orchards deserve their own category because few things feel more like Midwest fall than picking apples on a crisp afternoon.
All Seasons Orchard in Woodstock and Royal Oak Farm Orchard in Harvard are two local destinations to explore when planning an orchard outing.
And then there are the apple cider donuts.
I’m not saying I choose my fall outings based on the donuts. But I’m also not saying I don’t.
There’s something about coming home with fresh apples, cider, and a box of treats that makes even a simple afternoon feel like a seasonal tradition.
3. Fall Festivals Bring Our Communities Together
One of the best things about living in the northern Chicago suburbs is that you can find plenty to do close to home.
Long Grove Apple Fest is a favorite example, bringing an apple-themed celebration to a charming downtown setting. It’s the kind of outing where you can wander, enjoy a treat, and make an afternoon of it.
Throughout Lake and McHenry Counties, fall also brings opportunities to explore community festivals, seasonal markets, and downtown events.
For anyone considering a move here, these gatherings offer a glimpse of everyday life beyond the house itself. You get to discover the places where neighbors meet, families spend weekends, and local traditions take shape.
Check the organizers’ current calendars before heading out, since dates, hours, and activities vary.
4. The Fall Colors Make Familiar Places Feel New
There’s a window every fall when our area is especially beautiful.
Mature trees turn gold, orange, and red. Porches fill with pumpkins and mums. Country roads, neighborhood streets, and lakeside views take on a completely different look.
Between appointments, I’ll drive through a neighborhood I’ve visited hundreds of times and still think, “Wow, I forgot how pretty it is here.”
Lake and McHenry Counties offer so many ways to enjoy that change, whether you’re taking a walk through a forest preserve, exploring a downtown, or simply sitting outside with your coffee.
Give me a cool afternoon, changing leaves, jeans and a sweatshirt, and a fire pit in the evening. That’s pretty hard to beat.
5. The Weather Keeps Things Interesting
Fall in the Chicago suburbs requires a little flexibility—and sometimes an extra jacket in the car.
You might start the day bundled up, open the windows in the afternoon, and reach for a blanket that evening.
And Halloween? Every local parent knows the costume needs a backup plan.
Some years, the challenge is staying cool. Other years, it’s figuring out how to fit a winter coat under a costume. A princess dress with snow pants is a very Midwest combination.
But those comfortable fall days make it all worthwhile: just enough chill for a sweatshirt, sunshine overhead, and an excuse to linger around the fire pit.
The Best Part Is Finding Your Own Traditions
What I love most about fall here is how these outings become part of feeling at home.
You find your favorite orchard. You discover a pumpkin patch you return to every year. You look forward to a downtown festival or a familiar walking trail when the leaves change.
Those little traditions help turn a place you live into a community you love.
And pumpkin spice latte season doesn’t hurt, either.
What’s your favorite fall tradition in the Chicago suburbs? Share it in the comments—I’m always looking for another reason to try a cider donut.
